70 grams, any USB port

Saturn on the ceiling, from a thing the size of your thumb.

It plugs into a USB port on a bendy stalk, and it throws one enormous image onto whatever you point it at — the ceiling above a bed, the roof lining of a car, the inside of a tent. Swap the slide and the scene changes: a ringed planet, a full moon, a nebula, a meteor. Twist the ring on the head and it comes into focus. That is the whole machine.

Six-step guide: pull out the slide tray, seat the slide, push it back, plug in USB, aim, twist to focus

Six steps, no app

Pull the tray, drop in a slide, twist to focus

The slide tray slides out of the side of the head. Seat the disc you want, push the tray back in, plug the USB into anything that gives 5 V, and point it. The focus ring is the collar around the lens — turn it until the edge of the planet goes crisp, or deliberately soften it if you prefer a hazier glow.

No pairing, no app, no remote to lose. One button on the head switches between the projector and the night light.

The same lamp shown as a warm night light and as a galaxy projector

Two modes

A star show, or just enough light to see by

The projector is for the twenty minutes before sleep. The warm night-light mode is for the rest of the night — a low amber glow at the base of the head, aimed down, bright enough for a 2am nappy change or finding the bathroom door and not much more.

There is nothing spinning inside it, so it makes no sound at all. That matters more in a nursery than any feature on the box.

Dimensions: 11.65 inches total length, head 1.61 by 1.87 inches, 70 grams

It weighs nothing

70 g, and the neck holds whatever angle you bend it to

The head is 1.6″ × 1.9″ and the whole thing including the stalk and plug is 11.65″ long. It goes in a coat pocket. The gooseneck is stiff enough to stay where you put it, so you aim it once and forget it.

Which is why it ends up in odd places: a car USB port with the beam on the headliner, a power bank in a tent, a laptop port in a hotel room, a plug-in adapter beside a cot.

How many slides?

The lamp is the same. The slides are the product.

Every option below is the identical projector — what changes is how many discs come in the box. One disc is one scene until you buy more, so this is worth a moment’s thought rather than defaulting to the cheapest line.

Projector with a single randomly chosen slide

1 Slide — random

The cheapest way in. You do not choose which scene you get, so treat it as a try-before-you-commit rather than a gift.

Projector with six full-colour slides

6 Slides — full-colour

Enough variety that a child will not get bored in a fortnight. The sensible middle.

Projector with twenty-four full-colour slides

24 Slides — full-colour

The one that actually works as a present. Twenty-four scenes at roughly a dollar a slide — galaxies, planets, moons, aurora.

Projector with three black and white slides

Black & White sets

Monochrome discs — white line-work on black, no colour. Cleaner and more astronomical, but if you were picturing a colour nebula, pick a full-colour set instead.

3, 10 and 12-slide sets sit between these. All slides are the same size and fit the same tray, so a set bought later still works with a lamp bought today.

Before you buy

Five things that decide whether you will like it

  • The image does not move. This is a slide projector, not a motorised galaxy light. Whatever is on the disc is what stays on your ceiling until you change it by hand. If you are picturing drifting nebulae or a rotating starfield, this is the wrong product and we would rather you knew now.
  • It needs a dark room. Rated output is under 60 lumens. With the main light on you will see almost nothing. At night, with the curtains shut, it fills a ceiling.
  • There is no battery. It runs only while plugged into a USB port. Any 5 V source works — wall adapter, laptop, power bank, car socket. Do not use a fast-charging adapter; the manufacturer specifically warns against it, and a high-output charger can damage the unit.
  • One slide at a time. Changing scene means pulling the tray and swapping the disc — about five seconds, but it is a manual step, not a button.
  • Small parts. The slides are thin discs. For a young child’s room, keep the spare set out of reach and let an adult do the swapping.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Does the picture move or rotate?

No. This is the single most important thing on this page. It projects one still image, and it stays still. The motorised galaxy lights you have seen on social media are a different and more expensive category of product.

How big is the projected image?

It depends entirely on how far the lens is from the surface — closer is smaller and brighter, further is larger and dimmer, like any projector. On a bedside table aimed at a normal ceiling you get a large single scene overhead. We have not measured a diagonal at a fixed distance and will not invent one.

Is the light LED?

The manufacturer’s spec sheet contradicts itself on this, so we are not going to tell you either way until we have a straight answer. The number that actually matters is the rated output: under 60 lumens. Ask us and we will chase the supplier for the rest.

Can I use it in the car?

Yes — a car USB socket gives 5 V and the gooseneck bends to aim at the headliner. Obviously: parked car only. Do not run a projector at the roof of a moving vehicle.

Which charger should I plug it into?

Anything ordinary: a plain 5 V wall adapter, a laptop port, a power bank, a car socket. Avoid fast chargers — the manufacturer warns against them and it is the most likely way to kill the unit.

Can I buy extra slides later?

The discs are a standard size for this lamp and any set fits any unit, so yes in principle. We do not currently list them separately — if that is your plan, buying a larger set now is cheaper than buying twice.

Is it suitable for a nursery?

The night-light mode is genuinely well suited to it — low, warm, silent, aimed away from a baby’s eyes. Two cautions: it runs from a USB cable, so route the cable where it cannot be reached from a cot, and keep the spare slides out of a small child’s reach.
